When a Smog Check is required
A Smog Check is required every other year to renew your vehicle registration. Your DMV registration renewal notice will say either “Smog Certification Required” or “Smog Certification Required at a STAR station” We are Certified to do both. A Smog Check is required when a vehicle changes ownership as well. Generally the seller is responsible for the smog check. If you're buying a vehicle from a private seller, it has passed a Smog Check within the last 90 days. If you're buying a vehicle from a dealership, it should have been Smog Checked within the past two years. Family members can transfer a vehicles title without a Smog Check. A Smog Check is required for initial registration in California.

Model year exceptions
Here are the exceptions for gasoline, hybrid, and alternative-fuel vehicles: If your vehicle is eight years old or newer it does not need a Smog Check for vehicle registration renewal.

What to know
Bring your DMV registration renewal notice, if available. This will speed up the process of verifying the vehicle. If your vehicle's check engine or MIL light is on, it will not pass the smog check. It is recommended to get the vehicle repaired before coming in for a smog check. If your vehicles battery was recently replaced, disconnected, or jump started, it is recommended to drive the vehicle around for at least 60 miles but the more the better. This will allow the readiness monitors to set before your Smog Check.

What happens during the inspection
A Smog Check includes a visual inspection of the engine compartment, the exhaust system, fuel system, and all the emission control systems. There is a functional inspection of the emissions control system. We do an On-board diagnostic system check for most 1996 and newer model year vehicles. For 1999 and older vehicles we do a tailpipe emissions test.

What is a STAR Certified Smog Station
A STAR station is a California certified Smog Check inspection facility overseen by the state’s Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). These stations are held to higher performance standards, including stricter inspection protocols and ongoing monitoring, to ensure the most accurate emissions testing.
- Higher Standards: Regular stations that perform basic smog checks aren’t held to the same rigorous, data-driven benchmarks as STAR stations, which need to demonstrate consistent pass rates and accurate testing.
- Services Offered: Like regular stations, STAR stations can be either “test-only” (inspections only) or “test-and-repair” (inspections plus fixes). However, STAR stations are better equipped for complex cases.
- Cost: STAR checks often cost a little more (typically $10–$15) due to the extra oversight.
What is a Smog Check?
A California Smog Check is a mandatory vehicle emissions inspection designed to ensure cars, trucks, and other vehicles meet the states strict air quality standards by testing for harmful pollutants. It’s required by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and enforced through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The program started in 1984 and tests over 7 million vehicles annually. It’s Required to keep up with California’s rigid clean air laws (more than federal EPA standards) mandate smog checks to:
- Identify high-polluting vehicles.
- Prevent poorly maintained cars from contributing to air pollution.
- Help the state meet Clean Air Act requirements.
